AI chat summaries for teachers now cover assigned classroom notebooks

In short

From 19 October 2026, teachers using a major classroom AI notebook tool can read AI chat summaries for teachers. These show how students used an assigned notebook, with common questions, strengths and areas to support. Individual student chat transcripts come with them, and students see a notice that their teacher can read their chats. The feature becomes visible within 1 to 3 days [1]. Admins can now allow sharing with trusted domains, which is off by default.

What this means for you

  1. Teachers

    High

Teachers get an AI summary of how students engaged with an assigned notebook, plus individual chat transcripts [1]. Summaries may misread a student, so checking the transcript is likely to matter before acting on them.

  2. Students

    High

Students see a notice that their conversations in an assigned notebook are visible to their teacher [1]. This may change how freely some students ask questions.

  3. School IT admins

    High

External sharing, including trusted domains, is off by default and can be set by domain, organisational unit or group [1]. Teachers and students both need the notebook tool switched on to use the feature [1].

  4. Data protection leads and school leaders

    Medium

Teachers can now read individual student chat transcripts [1]. Privacy notices and parent communications may need updating to reflect this.

  5. Schools using the tool through an LTI connection

    Low

The source says the feature reaches LTI users in the coming weeks, with no date given [1]. Planning for these schools is likely to wait on a firm date.

Google has added AI chat summaries for teachers to teacher-led Gemini Notebook in Google Classroom, announcing the change on 19 October 2026 [1]. Rollout to Rapid Release and Scheduled Release education domains began that day, with 1 to 3 days for the feature to become visible [1].

The summaries are written by Gemini and based on student conversations with notebooks that a teacher assigns. Teachers also get individual student chat transcripts [1]. In a separate change, Workspace admins can now allow external sharing of notebooks, including with trusted domains [1].

What do the AI chat summaries for teachers show?

Google says the summaries give teachers more visibility into how students use assigned notebooks, "helping gauge instructional value and inform lesson planning" [1]. Teachers can see:

  • an overall summary of how students engaged with the assigned notebook
  • a sample of common themes, such as common questions, areas of strength and suggested areas to support
  • individual student chat transcripts for each assigned notebook

Google says the transcripts are there for context and "to confirm the accuracy of AI provided insights" [1]. That point matters. An AI summary may miss or misread what a student meant. The transcript is the record to check it against.

What are students told?

The feature only works for notebooks assigned through Google Classroom [1]. Students see a notification in the assigned notebook telling them that their conversations there are visible to their teacher [1].

The source does not say whether students can opt out. It also does not say exactly when the notice appears, for example before the first message.

What can admins control?

Admins can now turn on external sharing for Gemini Notebook with granular controls in the Admin console, including Trusted Domains [1]. This lets Classroom users create and assign notebooks when teachers and students are in different trusted domains, if an admin has enabled sharing with trusted domains [1].

External sharing is off by default. It can be set at domain, organisational unit (OU) and group level [1].

Access to the summaries also depends on admin settings. Teachers must be in a group or OU with Gemini Notebook set to On to create and assign notebooks and to view insight summaries [1]. Students need the same setting to use an assigned notebook [1].

When does it arrive and who gets it?

  • Insight summaries: full rollout to Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains from 19 October 2026, with 1 to 3 days for visibility [1].
  • External sharing controls: available now [1].
  • Editions: Education Fundamentals, Standard and Plus [1].
  • Gemini LTI users: in the coming weeks, with no date given [1].

Summaries only appear once the tool is enabled by an admin and students have interacted with an assigned notebook [1].

Who is affected?

  • Teachers gain summaries and transcripts for assigned notebooks, and the work of checking them.
  • Students now have their assigned-notebook chats visible to their teacher.
  • School IT admins decide who can use the tool and whether notebooks can be shared across trusted domains.
  • Data protection leads and school leaders may need to review privacy notices and policies.
  • Schools using the tool through an LTI connection wait for the feature with no confirmed date.

What should teachers and schools do now?

  • Tell students yourself. The in-notebook notice is a start. A short explanation in class of what you will read, and why, is likely to build more trust.
  • Read before you act. Treat a summary as a lead, not a finding. Open the transcript before you change a lesson plan or raise a concern about a student.
  • Keep summaries out of grading unless checked. AI-written themes may not reflect an individual student fairly.
  • Admins: review sharing before enabling it. External sharing is off by default [1]. Decide which domains to trust and at which level, domain, OU or group, before switching it on.
  • Check your privacy paperwork. Make sure your school privacy notice and any parent communications mention that teachers can read student chat transcripts in assigned notebooks.

What is not yet clear?

The announcement leaves several questions open [1]:

  • How long transcripts and summaries are kept, and who else can see them.
  • Whether admins can switch off insight summaries separately from the notebook tool itself.
  • Whether students can opt out, or use an assigned notebook without their chats being visible.
  • How the sample of common themes is chosen, and how accurate the summaries are [1].
  • The date the feature reaches Gemini LTI users, beyond the coming weeks.
  • Whether student conversations are used for any purpose beyond the summaries. The announcement does not say.

Questions

What do the new AI chat summaries for teachers include?

They include an overall summary of how students engaged with an assigned notebook, a sample of common themes such as common questions, areas of strength and suggested areas to support, and individual student chat transcripts [1].

Do students know their teacher can read their notebook chats?

Yes. Students see a notification in the assigned notebook telling them that their conversations there are visible to their teacher [1]. The announcement does not say whether students can opt out.

When will teachers see AI chat summaries for assigned notebooks?

Rollout to Rapid Release and Scheduled Release education domains began on 19 October 2026, with 1 to 3 days before the feature becomes visible [1]. Summaries only appear once an admin has enabled the tool and students have used an assigned notebook [1].

Is sharing notebooks with other schools switched on automatically?

No. External sharing, including sharing with trusted domains, is off by default [1]. Admins can turn it on at domain, organisational unit or group level [1].

Should teachers rely on the AI summary alone?

It is safer not to. The announcement says transcripts are provided so teachers can check the accuracy of the AI insights [1]. Reading the transcript before acting on a summary is likely to avoid misjudging a student.
