AI meeting recaps in team chat are rolling out with decisions and owners

In short

AI meeting recaps in team chat were announced on 19 October 2026 [1]. After a call with automatic note-taking on, a summary card lists key decisions, action items with named owners, and links to the notes, recording and transcript [1]. Cards arrive silently, with no unread badge [1]. Rollout started on 16 October 2026 for early-release domains and starts on 27 October 2026 for the rest, taking up to 15 days to appear [1].

What this means for you

  1. Facilitators and meeting hosts

    High

The host's notes-sharing choice decides whether a recap posts at all: no card appears if notes go to hosts and co-hosts only [1]. Hosts may need to set this before each sensitive meeting.

  2. Remote team members and late joiners

    Medium

Decisions and owners land in the meeting's chat space without an unread badge [1]. People who rely on notifications could miss them unless someone points to the card.

  3. Workspace administrators

    High

The feature is on by default where the suite's AI is enabled, follows existing note-taking and AI policies, and has no end-user setting [1]. Admins are likely to field questions about who controls it.

  4. Teachers and schools

    Low

The announcement lists Business, Enterprise and Frontline Plus editions only, with no education edition named [1]. School staff probably will not see recaps for now.

Google announced on 19 October 2026 that Gemini meeting recaps will post automatically in Google Chat after Google Meet calls, listing key decisions, action items with owners and links to the notes, recording and transcript [1]. The rollout began on 16 October 2026 for Rapid Release domains and starts on 27 October 2026 for Scheduled Release domains, with up to 15 days for the feature to become visible [1].

The card appears in the Chat space linked to the meeting. It only appears when automatic note-taking was running during the call [1]. It also arrives silently, so nobody gets an unread badge when it lands [1].

What do the AI meeting recaps in team chat contain?

Google says each recap card has four parts [1]:

  • Meeting summary: a high-level overview of the main topics and takeaways.
  • Key decisions: the conclusions and agreements reached during the call.
  • Action items: next steps, each with a named owner. Google describes these as "Assigned next steps with designated owners so team members can immediately take action" [1].
  • Links: one-click access to the Gemini meeting notes document, the recording and the transcript.

Google says colleagues who missed the meeting or joined late can catch up without reading long transcripts or hunting for files [1].

When does a recap appear, and when does it not?

A recap is generated only when automatic note-taking is active during the Meet call and a meeting chat conversation exists [1]. If the host sets notes sharing to hosts and co-hosts only, no recap card is posted to the group chat [1].

Cards are delivered without bolding the conversation or adding an unread badge in the conversation list [1]. Google said "To reduce distraction, recap cards are delivered silently" [1].

Any participant in the conversation can delete the card [1]. Deleting it removes the summary from the chat thread, but the original notes document stays in Google Drive [1].

Who controls the setting?

The feature is on by default for organisations with Gemini for Google Workspace enabled [1]. It follows existing note-taking and Gemini admin policies [1]. End users have no setting for it [1]. Hosts can keep recaps out of the group chat through the notes-sharing setting, and any participant can delete a card afterwards [1].

When does the rollout reach my organisation?

Rapid Release domains have been receiving the feature since 16 October 2026 [1]. Scheduled Release domains start on 27 October 2026 [1]. Each rollout can take up to 15 days before the feature is visible [1], so some Scheduled Release users may not see it until around 11 November 2026.

It is available on Business Standard and Business Plus, Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus, and Frontline Plus [1].

Who is affected?

  • Facilitators and meeting hosts: the notes-sharing setting now decides whether decisions and owners are shown to the whole chat [1].
  • Remote team members and late joiners: recaps land quietly in the chat space, with no unread badge [1].
  • Workspace administrators: the feature is on by default and follows existing policies, with no end-user switch [1].
  • Teachers and schools: no education edition is named in the availability list [1].

What should facilitators do now?

  • Check your edition and release track. That tells you whether recaps will appear and roughly when.
  • Decide on notes sharing before the call. For sensitive meetings, such as personnel or client discussions, set notes to hosts and co-hosts only so no card posts to the group chat [1].
  • Tell the team where to look. Because cards arrive silently [1], say at the end of the call that the recap will be in the chat space.
  • Check owners and decisions. An AI summary may misattribute an action or miss a nuance. Read the card and reply in the thread with corrections, or delete it if it is wrong; any participant can delete it [1].
  • Keep one source of truth. If your team tracks work elsewhere, copy the action items there rather than relying on a chat message that any participant in the conversation can delete [1].

What is not yet clear?

  • The announcement does not say whether a recap card can be edited, or only deleted [1].
  • It does not say which meeting languages are supported for recaps.
  • It does not explain how recaps behave for external guests in a chat space.
  • No education edition is listed, and there is no stated plan to add one [1].
  • It does not say whether a deleted card is kept for retention or audit purposes, only that the notes document stays in Drive [1].

Questions

What is in an AI meeting recap posted to team chat?

Each card has a high-level summary, key decisions, action items with named owners, and links to the meeting notes document, the recording and the transcript [1].

Will participants get a notification when the recap appears?

No. Recap cards are delivered silently, without bolding the conversation or adding an unread badge [1]. It helps to tell participants at the end of the call where to find the recap.

How can a host stop a recap from being posted to the group chat?

If the host sets notes sharing to hosts and co-hosts only, no recap card is posted to the group chat [1]. No recap is generated either if automatic note-taking was not running during the call [1].

Can someone remove a recap that is wrong or sensitive?

Yes. Any participant in the meeting conversation can delete the recap card [1]. Deleting it removes the summary from the chat thread, but the original notes document stays in cloud storage [1].

When will the feature reach my organisation?

Early-release domains have been receiving it since 16 October 2026, and scheduled-release domains start on 27 October 2026, each with up to 15 days for the feature to appear [1]. It is limited to Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus and Frontline Plus editions [1].
